How do I know if I need to see a psychologist?
There’s no single answer for everyone. Some indications that therapy might be helpful include: that an area of your life is not going well, you can’t stop thinking about something that is bothering you, you have no energy to get through the day, or a relationship seems to be faltering.

How do I know if the psychologist is a good match for me?
You’ll likely feel comfortable and safe after two or three sessions and you’ll feel that the psychologist understands you and your point of view. Rapport between a therapist and client is a very important factor in the success of therapy.

How long will therapy last?
That depends on the concerns to be addressed and how much your life has been impacted. Therapy can last from a few weeks to a year or more; however, you are always in the position to decide how long you’d like to participate.

Are there any risks in therapy?
People sometimes feel worse for a while in the beginning of therapy, especially because they are looking closely at situations or feelings that are difficult. This usually passes in a reasonable amount of time. In a very few cases, people feel much worse; this should always be discussed with the therapist so any supportive resources can be utilized.

Do psychologists prescribe medications?
In Illinois and Indiana, psychologists do not prescribe medications; you must see a psychiatrist or your primary care physician for an evaluation to determine if a prescription for medication would be beneficial.

Psychologists evaluate clients and provide a diagnosis prior to providing therapy services and we will help you access medical care if we recommend that you consider medication as an option. However, the decision is always left to you.

Will my insurance pay for therapy?*
Mental health services are often covered by your insurance. To determine if you have coverage, call your insurer (the number is on your insurance card) and ask the following questions:

  1. Do I have mental health coverage?
  2. Is a diagnosis required for reimbursement?
  3. Do I need a referral from my physician?
  4. May I choose any provider - or is there a list of required or recommended providers?
  5. What percentage of the fee is covered?

*In my practice, I request that the fee be paid at the time of service. I will supply a medical receipt that is then sent in for reimbursement by the client.
